Dr. Debra Cook and her team of professionals at Cook Orthodontics provide patients of all ages with outstanding orthodontic treatment and services. We are proud to be a leading Rancho Santa Margarita, CA orthodontist office that serves residents throughout RSM, Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch, Mission Viejo, Foothill Ranch and Trabuco Canyon, CA.

We strongly believe that starting orthodontic treatment at an early age provides your child with many benefits to his or her health. Parents should take their children in for an orthodontic evaluation at the first sign of any problems or no later than age 7. At this age, even though treatment may not be necessary, Dr. Cook can provide your child with a thorough evaluation to determine the best time treatment should start if it is deemed necessary.

Benefits of an Early Orthodontic Evaluation

There are several benefits to beginning early orthodontic treatment including:

  • The opportunity to detect problems early
  • More opportunity for effective treatment
  • To guide growth and development so that serious problems can be avoided later in life
  • The monitoring of your child's tooth movement and jaw growth

Why Age 7?

By the time your child reaches the age of 7, his or her first molars will have erupted to establish the back bite. This is when Dr. Cook can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. When your child is examined by this age, our RSM and Mission Viejo orthodontist is able to detect issues that may require treatment. This early evaluation also ensures that your child will have a healthy and beautiful smile in the future.

Phase Treatment for Children

A common orthodontic treatment option for children that parents should be aware of is Phase Treatment. This is a specialized process that encompasses tooth straightening and physical facial changes. The goal of this treatment is to maximize the opportunity to accomplish the ideal, healthy, functional and aesthetic result. Dr. Cook will tell you at your consultation if phase treatment is recommended, unnecessary or optional.

Phase treatment is only beneficial to a child when the natural jaw structure is contributing to an orthodontic problem. This is why an initial evaluation by an orthodontist is recommended by the time a child reaches the age of 7.

Phase I of treatment establishes the foundation for a lifetime of beautiful teeth. The goal of this first phase is to develop the jaw size to accommodate all the permanent teeth and to ensure that the upper and lower jaws relate to each other properly. During this phase of treatment, appliances are utilized to direct the growth relationship of the upper and lower jaws so that a good foundation can be established to provide room for the eruption of all permanent teeth.

Phase II of treatment is initiated when all or almost all of the permanent teeth have erupted and usually requires braces on the teeth for an average of 18 to 24 months. The goal of this phase is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue and other teeth.
