Did you know that October is National Orthodontic Health Month in the United States? Organized by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), this month-long campaign was designed to create awareness about the many benefits associated with a healthy, straight smile.

national orthodontic health month mission viejo orthodotnistIn light of this important month, the team here at Cook Orthodontics in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA would like to remind our patients and their parents of how important it is to maintain good oral hygiene, especially during Halloween time.

It's no coincidence that this awareness-raising campaign takes place during the Halloween season, when many people both young and adult are eating more candy. With this in mind, Dr. Cook has shared some tips for our patients wearing braces to keep in mind this Halloween.

Scary Treats

If you are currently wearing braces, you should avoid eating hard, crunchy, sticky or chewy candies and treats. These foods can harm your brackets and wires and broken wires and brackets are expensive to replace. Plus, your treatment time can be longer if parts of your braces need replacing. Try and steer clear of the following treats:

  • Caramels and other chewy candies
  • Taffy
  • Popcorn
  • Licorice
  • Bubblegum
  • Jelly beans
  • Nuts
  • Taco chips

Friendly Treats

Halloween doesn't have to be completely flavorless just because you're wearing braces. Plain chocolate candy that melts in your mouth is fine, provided that you brush and floss well afterward. Other yummy foods that won't damage your braces include:

  • Pudding
  • Soft peanut butter cups
  • Thinly-sliced apples
  • Soft fruits cut in small pieces
  • Popsicles
  • Yogurt
  • Cake

Most Importantly, Have Fun!

We wish everyone a safe and spooky Halloween season! If you have any questions about what you should or should not eat while wearing braces, don't hesitate to contact us as we're always happy to answer any questions you may have!
