Orthognathic Surgery

Here at Dr. Debra Cook’s Rancho Santa Margarita, CA orthodontic office, we offer comprehensive orthodontic treatments that cater to a variety of unique orthodontic needs. In addition to our services like clear braces and Invisalign, we also offer treatments for patients near Mission Viejo and Ladera Ranch, CA that are designed to correct jaw abnormalities and facial asymmetry while acting in conjunction with orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery.

Orthognathic surgery is designed to treat a range of minor and major skeletal and dental irregularities such as misalignment of the jaws and teeth. These abnormalities can often cause difficulty and pain associated with everyday movements of the jaw and face. Jaw surgery can help to correct these problems, and when combined with braces or other orthodontic treatments, it can improve the functionality of the jaw and the overall appearance of the facial profile.

Do You Need Jaw Surgery?

According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, some conditions that might indicate the need for corrective jaw surgery include:

  • Difficult chewing or biting food
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chronic jaw or jaw joint (TMJ) pain and headache
  • Excessive wear of the teeth
  • Open bite (space between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed)
  • Unbalanced facial appearance from the front, or side
  • Facial injury or birth defects
  • Receding chin
  • Protruding jaw
  • Inability to make the lips meet without straining
  • Chronic mouth breathing and dry mouth
  • Sleep apnea

Our Rancho Santa Margarita orthodontist and her team of professionals use the latest technology to demonstrate to you the many benefits of jaw surgery. If you believe you are a candidate for jaw surgery, an examination with Dr. Cook will tell you if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you. In many cases, jaw surgery may be unnecessary if orthodontic care such as braces or certain appliances can correct the problem.

If you have any further questions or would like to schedule an examination, please contact our RSM orthodontics office today.  During your exam we will determine if orthognathic surgery is in fact the correct treatment to fit your needs. We proudly serve patients of all ages from Rancho Santa Margarita, Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch, Mission Viejo, Foothill Ranch and Trabuco Canyon, CA. We look forward to serving you!
