Retention

Maintaining Your Smile After Your Braces or Invisalign Treatment Is Finished

Here at Cook Orthodontics, Dr. Debra Cook and our team in Rancho Santa Margarita value each and every one of our patients, and we believe that a strong orthodontist-to-patient connection is key in having a pleasant and enjoyable experience. We are enthusiastic for our patients when they reach the end of their braces or Invisalign treatment, and we see it as an achievement for both the patient and the staff. At the same time, we like to remind our patients that their orthodontic care doesn’t end here: retainers must be worn regularly to keep their teeth in place while their gums and bones adjust. In order to maintain the new alignment of your teeth, we utilize Hawley Retainers, Trutain Retainers and Bonded Retainers.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are one of the most commonly used retainers, and involve combining metal wires and sturdy acrylic to keep your teeth from drifting out of their new alignment. These metal wires can be adjusted as needed to finish treatment, and the acrylic can be custom-made to be colored or patterned to your liking.

Trutain Retainers

While being both removable and transparent, Trutain retainers are made to fit over the entire arch of your teeth. They involve no metal or wires, and can be used to aid in minor tooth movement. These retainers are also helpful for those who grind at night, since they protectively cover the teeth.

Bonded Retainers

Bonded retainers are glued to the inside of your lower teeth, and are considered more permanent because patients cannot take them out on their own. Because of this, they don’t get lost or misplaced, but they still need to be brushed and kept clean.
